In the commune of Trépail AW² has renovated a vinyard lodge for the House of Krug, a homage to the heritage and terroirs of the Champagne region. Partners Reda Amalou and Stéphanie Ledoux had already restructured La Maison de Famille Krug in Reims, maintaining the link between the different Krug spaces in Champagne.

Part of the visual landmark and the history of the Champagne vineyards, the winegrower’s lodge was once a tool shed or used to provide shelter to those working in the vineyards.

As close as possible to the vineyards, the raw Burgundy stone countertop stands out as a central element. Extracted from a quarry and cut by a marblemaker in Reims, the monolithic stone block creates a space for exchange, encouraging conversation and tasting. Its generous shape, light hue, texture and rough finish echo the chalk found in the soil of the Champagne region. This material expresses a sense of attachment to the land, of belonging to a place.

To conserve the authenticity of the Champagne region’s landscape and showcase its heritage, the original brick foundations have been preserved whilst integrating a belvedere with a distinctly contemporary design, providing views of the surrounding environment. The project is certified the High Quality Environmental (HQE) standards.

The bioclimatic design of the Lodge and of its extension, the use of biosourced materials and the thermal performance of the rehabilitated envelope all contributed to the project’s HQE certification’’. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, the commune also offers 5.2km footpath through the heart of the vineyards, leading visitors to discover a rich array of scenery and a number of historic lodges.
